New Zealand's Martin Guptill is likely to be "available" for his side's vital 'Super 12' 2021 T20 World Cup contest against India, said the country's cricket board on Thursday.
The experienced New Zealand batter had suffered a toe injury against Pakistan. A blow to his toe off Haris Rauf's delivery had raised questions over Guptill making it to New Zealand Playing XI against India. New Zealand cricket board, however, sees him taking part in the do-or-die contest on October 31.
"Martin Guptill's left big toe is badly bruised and pretty sore but the sense is that he will still be available for Sunday night's game," New Zealand Cricket said in a statement. "He will be further assessed at training tomorrow (Friday)."
After his side's five-wicket loss to Pakistan, New Zealand coach Gary Stead had said that Guptill was not feeling comfortable after enduring the blow.
"Guptill was looking in a little bit of discomfort at the end of the match and the next 24 to 48 hours will be decisive," Stead had told reporters after the match.
New Zealand have already endured a major blow in the World T20, having lost paceman Lockie Ferguson with a calf muscle tear. "We'll see how he scrubs up overnight. He looked in a little bit of discomfort at the end of the game and it might take 24 to 48 hours to see how he goes," Stead had added.
