Australia's veteran batter Steve Smith returned to form with his first Test century of 2024. Smith scored a century on Day 2 of the third Test at The Gabba, Brisbane against Rohit Sharma-led India. With his 33rd Test century, Smith equalled England batter Joe Root's record for most Test centuries against India.
Root has 10 centuries from 30 Tests against India. Also, he has most runs against India in the format.
For Australia, Smith is only behind former captain Ricky Ponting who has 41 Test centuries from 168 Tests. He surpassed another former captain Steve Waugh on the list.
Smith reached his century with a single off Akash Deep in the 82nd over of the innings. He took 185 deliveries to reach the milestone. This is his first Test century in 25 innings. His last Test century came against England at Lord's in June 2023. This is the longest break for him in red-ball cricket between two centuries.
Smith was dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah in his second over with the second new ball. He edged one to slip fielder Rohit Sharma. His knock of 101 from 190 deliveries was laced with 12 fours.

This is also Smith's fourth Test century in Brisbane. He is level with Matthew Hayden and Ponting. Only Greg Chappell and Michael Clarke are ahead of him with five Test centuries at the venue.
