Australia crushed the Jasprit Bumrah-led team by 6 wickets, ending India's ten-year dominance of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, on January 5 (Sunday). The Australian batting lineup was too strong for India to contain on Day 3 of the final Test match in Sydney, as the hosts chased down a target of 162 runs in just 27 overs. For the first time in the competition's history, India did not go to the World Test Championship (WTC) final. India will not participate in the Lord's final in June 2025, despite having advanced to the final in 2021 and 2023.
This was the first series that India had lost to Australia since their disastrous visit in 2014–15, when then-captain MS Dhoni quit Test cricket in the middle of the series. Over the previous ten years, India had dominated the competition under the leadership of Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane, winning both home and away series that will never be forgotten.
The rivalry became one of the most marketable bilateral series in cricket after Kohli's stunning victory in Australia in 2018–19. India gained prominence during Kohli's brief absence by winning the 2020–21 series with an exciting finale at the Gabba. In contrast, the 2024–25 series saw India not only struggle at bat but also become embroiled in a number of scandals, which nearly brought back memories of the disastrous tour a decade prior.
When will next Border-Gavaskar Trophy take place?
There is always massive hype around the India vs Australia clashes and after this epic five-match series, fans are curious when will these two juggernauts of cricket clash again in a red-ball series. The next Border-Gavaskar Trophy will be hosted by India this time and it will happen in January and February in 2027.
India's next assignment
India will be hosting England for five T20Is and three ODIs at home starting later this month. They will now shift their focus to the upcoming Champions Trophy which will be held under hybrid model policy. Pakistan will be hosting the tournament with India's matches happening in Dubai. The mega tournament will start on February 19.
