Fleming is expected to receive a contract extension after the franchise's eighth-place finish in IPL 2026.

In a series of surprising events, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are set to retain veteran head coach Stephen Fleming for the 2027 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), despite the five-time champions facing a tough run and a noticeable decline in results over the past few seasons.

CSK to part ways with Stephen Fleming?

As per the latest report by Cricbuzz, CSK's team management still backs the former New Zealand batter despite a negative narrative going around him across the social media platforms. The development is also being considered as a reflection of MS Dhoni's enduring influence within the team's think tank.

The report claims that Fleming's contract is renewed on year-to-year basis, and the Chennai-based franchise could extend his stay despite poor performance in the 2026 edition. Fleming, who took over the coaching duties of the side in 2009, has shared a remarkably successful partnership with MS Dhoni, with their long-standing bond reportedly growing even stronger over the course of time.

How Chennai Super Kings played in IPL 2026]

The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side went against their long-standing philosophy of preferring experienced players and signed a few fresh players like Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma for a big sum of money. However, things did not go in the favor of the Yellow Army, as they managed a pathetic eighth place finish.

The Yellow Army failed to qualify for the knockout stages, after managing 12 points from 14 games (Six wins and eight losses). Notably, CSK's talisman MS Dhoni did not feature in a single game because of a calf strain.

It will be interesting to see if the Yellow Army can turn the tables in their favor in the upcoming editon of the tournament, as both Stephen Fleming and Ruturaj Gaikwad will enter the tournament with a lot of pressure on their shoulders.
