The cracks in the Indian cricket team’s support system are beginning to widen following a devastating 4-0 T20I series defeat in England. Gautam Gambhir-led India's coaching staff is reportedly on the verge of a mass exit. Multiple support staff members are considering walking away once their contracts expire at the conclusion of the ongoing England tour.

Morne Morkel to resign as India's bowling coach
As per a report by TOI, chief among those looking at the exit door is bowling coach Morne Morkel. The former South African speedster is reportedly weighing his future with the squad amid India's recent struggles on the field. While his current contract wraps up after the upcoming three-match ODI series against England, Morkel has yet to commit to an extension. The BCCI is actively trying to persuade him to stay, and while discussions are ongoing, the Times of India reports that the board is already bracing for the worst and looking for potential replacements.
Morkel isn't the only one feeling the strain of the grueling international calendar. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate is also rumored to be second-guessing his future with the national team, largely due to the relentless, year-round travel schedule. With speculation mounting that ten Doeschate is in talks for a lucrative return to an IPL franchise, the BCCI faces a chaotic week ahead. They must quickly resolve these coaching dilemmas before India heads into a packed winter schedule featuring a T20I series in Zimbabwe and a Test tour of Sri Lanka.
Ryan ten Doeschate likely to step down as India's assistant coach too
Gambhir’s hand-picked coaching unit is on the verge of a major shakeup just two years after its formation in July 2024. With Morne Morkel and Ryan ten Doeschate considering their futures, the BCCI is locked in emergency negotiations to convince them to stay. The unfolding crisis comes at a tense moment for Indian cricket, particularly after Ravichandran Ashwin exposed the team's tactical blunders following their recent debacle in England.
The timing could not be worse for the board, with a packed overseas calendar just days away. India travels to Zimbabwe for three T20Is later this month, where NCA chief VVS Laxman is expected to step in as coach. Immediately after, the team flies to Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series in early August. If Morkel decides to step down, the BCCI is prepared to fast-track Lakshmipathy Balaji, the newly appointed Centre of Excellence fast-bowling coach, to travel with the red-ball squad.
Concurrently, a definitive change is already brewing in the fielding department. Following a string of poor defensive displays, fielding coach T. Dilip is set to be replaced. His current contract expires after the conclusion of the ODI series against England, and the board has reportedly decided against an extension, paving the way for a new fielding coach to take over before the Zimbabwe tour.
