Pant, who has been sidelined due to multiple injuries sustained in a car accident late last year, attended the IPL auction along with head coach Ricky Ponting and team director Sourav Ganguly. Even though he hasn't played on the field since May 2022, marking his last IPL appearance against Mumbai at Wankhede Stadium in India, where he scored 39 runs off 33 balls, the 26-year-old continues to be a crucial figure for the team.
In a pre-auction interview with iplt20.com in Dubai, Pant talked about how his life changed after the unfortunate car accident towards the end of the previous year. While acknowledging the challenges he faced, he also emphasised that his recovery has gone well.
"The kind of accident I had, [I'm] lucky to be alive. I think it was very challenging, especially the first part I would say more from a physical point of view because in the starting there was a lot of pain to be endured. But just looking at the journey till now, I think it's been going really well from a recovery point of view. I felt like I couldn't face people and all, and I felt like I had to do something which gives me confidence," Pant said.
The IPL auction 2024 witnessed the ten teams acquiring a total of 72 players, which included 30 overseas players, with a cumulative expenditure of Rs 230.45 crore. Notably, Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc made history as the most expensive player in IPL, securing a remarkable deal with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for Rs 24.75 crore. In contrast, Australian player Josh Hazlewood failed to find a buyer despite having a base price of Rs 2 crore.
