In a major jolt to Lucknow Super Giants right ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, England pacer Mark Wood has been ruled out of the the glitzy league with an elbow injury. A report in 'Espncricinfo' said that Wood will not represent Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL beginning March 26 after picking up a right elbow injury during the first Test against the West Indies last week.
New entrants Super Giants had paid Rs 7.5 crore for Wood at the IPL auction last month. Wood could only bowl 17 overs in the game against West Indies in North Sound. The Super Giants will be led by K L Rahul and coached by Andy Flower.
Wood is not the first pull out of IPL 2022. In February, England opener Jason Roy had pulled out of the cash-rich league, citing the challenge of staying in the tournament bubble for an extended period. Roy was signed by the newly-added IPL team, Gujarat Titans (GT), for his base price of INR 2 crore at the mega auction. It was also revealed that the Gujarat franchise recruited Afghanistan batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz in place of Roy.
Similarly, Alex Hales has recently decided to withdraw from the upcoming edition of the cash-rich league, stating bubble fatigue and his mental well-being as the prime reasons to pull out. Hales was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for INR 1.5 crore at the two-day bidding event. The two-time champions picked Australia’s white-ball captain Aaron Finch as a replacement for Hales.
Meanwhile, one of the two new franchises in IPL 2022 edition, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) will begin their maiden campaign against Gujarat Titans (GT) at Wankhede stadium, Mumbai on March 28. The KL Rahul-led side has been considered as the best on paper after their utility picks in the IPL 2022 mega auction where mentor Gautam Gambhir called the shots.
This will be Rahul’s chance to lead a new franchise to glory in the 10-team tournament after ordinary seasons with Punjab Kings (PBKS). LSG roped in a few big players including Quinton de Kock, Jason Holder and others in the auction for big bucks and will be looking to start their season with a bang against Hardik Pandya-led GT which looks relatively unbalanced.
