Shubman Gill was in red-hot form coming into the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 final against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Gill got a reprieve early on in the innings as Deepak Chahar dropped a sitter off Tushar Deshpande in the second over. The Gujarat Titans (GT) opener then played a few scintillating shots on the flat deck of Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium. However, Ravindra Jadeja did the trick for CSK as Gill missed the ball and got stumped by MS Dhoni.

Gill missed out on breaking former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain Virat Kohli’s record of most runs by boundaries (fours and sixes). Gill hit seven fours in his 20-ball 39 to take his season's tally to 118. Gill needed five more boundaries to break Kohli's IPL 2016 record. Ahead of Gill is Delhi Capitals (DC) captain David Warner whereas Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener Jos Buttler tops the list.

Highest boundary count in an IPL season

128 - Jos Buttler (RR, 2022)
122 - Virat Kohli (RCB, 2016)
119 - David Warner (SRH, 2016)
118 - Shubman Gill (GT, 2023)

However, Gill was able to break Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opener Ruturaj Gaikwad’s record for youngest batter to win orange cap in IPL history. Gaikwad won the orange cap in IPL 2021 as he scored 635 runs in the season. Gill finished the season with 890 runs from 17 innings at an average of 59.33 including three centuries and four half-centuries.

Gill was also able to surpass Buttler on the list of most runs in an IPL season. Buttler scored 863 runs for Royals in IPL 2022. Before the final, Gill needed just 13 more runs to surpass Buttler. Many expected him to break Kohli’s record of 973 runs in a season as well considering he hit three centuries from four innings.

Earlier, Gill shared a 67-run opening partnership with Wriddhiman Saha. The wicketkeeper-batter scored 54 runs from 39 deliveries including five fours and one six. Sai Sudharsan’s record-breaking 96-run knock helped Titans post a big total of 214/4. Skipper Hardik Pandya also contributed with an unbeaten cameo of 12-ball 21.
