Sam Curran's 88-run knock went in vain as Yuzvendra Chahal's hat-trick, followed by Prabhsimran Singh and Shreyas Iyer's half-centuries, helped Punjab Kings to register a four-wicket win against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Iyer, who came to bat in the fifth over after Priyansh Arya's wicket, anchored the innings for his side with a 72 off 40 run knock to guide his team to their sixth win of the tournament.
With that five-wicket win against CSK, PBKS jumped to number two in the points table with 13 points. While chasing 191 runs, PBKS are off to a good start, but Priyansh Arya (23) got out in the fifth over, bowled by Khaleel Ahmad. After Arya's wicket, skipper Shreyas Iyer joined Prabhsimran Singh for the chase, and both batters stitched a 72-run stand. Prabhsimran got out in the 13th over, bowled by Noor Ahmad.
After Prabhsimran's wicket, CSK got another breakthrough as Nehal Wadhera got out scoring just 5 runs. After Wadhera's wicket, Shashank Singh joined Shreyas Iyer for the chase. Shashank played a 23 off 12 run cameo before Dewald Brevis picked a nearly impossible catch during 18th over bowled by Ravindra Jadeja.
After being asked to bat, CSK lost openers Shaik Rasheed and Ayush Mhatre in just four overs, but Sam Curran smashed his first fifty of the season (88 off 47 balls, 9x4, 4x6) as he anchored the recovery process of his side from a precarious 48 for three in the power play.
Curran stitched a partnership with Dewald Brevis (32) to carefully plot CSK’s way back into the contest with a robust 78-run fourth-wicket stand and turned on the heat on PBKS' bowling.
Until the 16th over, CSK were batting well with nearly nine runs per over when the England all-rounder picked Suryansh Shedge to attack. He got smashed for two sixes on the first two balls over long-off and deep square leg, and on the third legitimate delivery, it took a splendid diving effort from Shreyas Iyer to save a certain third six in the over.
But Curran wasn’t done yet as he pierced gaps on the next two deliveries to get as many boundaries, eventually collecting 26 off the PBKS novice.
Curran got out in the 18th over, getting an edge while attempting to duck under a Marco Jansen bouncer. Wicketless Chahal comes to bowl the 19 over, he was hit for a six by MS Dhoni (11), but the bowler had him caught at long off on the second delivery. On the fourth, Deepak Hooda (2) played one meekly towards the backwards point while on the fifth, impact substitute Anshul Kamboj (0) was cleaned up. Noor Ahmad (0) tried to put one away but ended up miscuing his shot, and Jansen came in from long-on to complete the hat-trick, which was the leg-spinner's second in the IPL.
