On May 16, for Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) must-win clash against Gujarat Titans (GT), Varun Chakaravarthy pushed through pain to play for the team. While skipper Ajinkya Rahane said at the coin toss that ‘Varun is fit’, After the game, Rahane changed tone and said lauded Varun's courage to play the game despite a sore foot. Chakaravarthy bowled in tandem with Sunil Narine and conceded 47 runs from his quota of four overs. After KKR’s 29-run win over GT, ‘Player of the match’ Finn Allen was asked to given an update on mystery spinner’s injury. The Kiwi opener lauded the T20 World Cup 2026-winning spinner and backed him to recover before the next game.
"Unfortunately, I do not have a physio degree, so that is a bit above my pay grade (on Varun's status for remaining matches). But he is a tough guy, and it says a lot about his character that he came out to bowl despite being sore. It means a lot to the group when players are willing to push through pain for the team," Allen said in the post-match press conference.

Varun has been wicketless in last two games but he has had an impact despite injury. KKR head coach had revealed that he sustained a fracture during the match against Delhi Capitals (DC) when he limped off the field. He was seen walking with a leg brace and a stick, missing the game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
KKR’s next game
The KKR medical staff has their work cut out ahead of KKR’s next game. They face Mumbai Indians (MI) at home in another must-win game. Considering the pitch conditions and the firepower in MI lineup, KKR would want Varun in their lineup as Anukul Roy has been inconsistent.
After the win over GT, KKR moved to the seventh spot on the points table. They need to win their remaining two games to stay in contention for the playoffs. Their last game is against Delhi Capitals (DC). Till then, it will be clear whether a win will guarantee them a playoffs berth or not.
