Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) batter Heinrich Klaasen went on a rampage against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Arun Jaitley stadium on Sunday and hit a record-breaking 37-ball century to break several IPL records. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, SRH were provided with a terrific start by openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head. The duo mustered up 79 runs in the powerplay itself before Abhishek got dismissed in the seventh over for 32 runs.
Then, Head and Klaasen went on to form a brilliant 83-run partnership to carry the hosts over the 170-run mark within 13 overs. The former was dismissed by Sunil Narine after playing a fine knock of 76 runs from 40 deliveries. However, KKR's problems didn't end after the Australian's dismissal as Klaasen shifted gears and new batter Ishan Kishan also didn't take much time to score boundaries.
After smashing a 17-ball half-century, Klaasen went on to pulverize the KKR bowling attack even more and ended up completing his century after facing just 37 deliveries. This was his second hundred in the tournament and he would go on to remain unbeaten on 105 after the end of 20 overs as SRH put up a gigantic total of 278/3 in 20 overs.
Klaasen's stunning innings saw him hit seven boundaries and nine sixes as the Hyderabad-based franchise posted the third-highest total in IPL history. The team has now scored the four highest totals in the league's history.
Heinrich Klaasen broke several records with his century against KKR
Klaasen broke multiple records with his dazzling knock against KKR. For starters, the 33-year-old became the third joint-fastest IPL centurion alongside Yusuf Pathan. He became the fastest South African to score a century in the league, breaking David Miller's record of 38 deliveries. This was also the fastest century ever scored against KKR in the competition's history.
With the knock, Klaasen also became the SRH batter to score the fastest century in the league, breaking teammate Travis Head's record, who scored a 39-ball ton against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru last season.
KKR now have a mountain task on their hands. If they can go on to chase down the 279-run target, they will write their name in IPL's history books, however it is definitely not going to be easy for the reigning champions to do so.
