Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans' (GT) aspirations of finishing in the top two of the IPL 2025 standings took a big hit as they suffered a 33-run defeat to Rishabh Pant's Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Narendra Modi stadium on May 23. LSG's formidable total of 235, set up by Mitchell Marsh's sensational maiden IPL century and a blistering half-century from Nicholas Pooran, proved to be a challenging chase for GT.
Initially, GT's high-powered top order faltered, but the explosive hitting from Shahrukh Khan and Sherfane Rutherford brought them roaring back into contention, making it seem for a while that they might actually pull off the massive chase. However, GT then lost wickets in quick succession during the death overs, ultimately falling well short of the target. While GT has already secured a playoff spot, this defeat has seriously dented their chances of securing a crucial top-two finish.
Despite the defeat GT remained unaffected in the standings as they they are still the table toppers with 18 points. Meanwhile, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings both have 17 points each. These three teams have secured a spot for the playoffs and MI joined them on May 21. Both RCB and PBKS have a chance to go past GT, provided they end up winning their remaining matches. While RCB have two matches in hand, PBKS are yet to play their final league match.
If RCB suffer a defeat, they might slip to the third spot, falling below PBKS. On the other side, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have no chance of finishing in the Top 4. Not just this, even MI, who have 16 points in 13 games, can get past GT if they win their last match against PBKS on May 26 they can upstage GT, given their superior net run rate.
