Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season has almost reached the business end, with the playoff race now heating up rapidly. As the league stage nears its conclusion, franchises are no longer just fighting for qualification but are also eyeing a crucial top-two finish that significantly boosts their chances of reaching the final.

Under the IPL playoff format, the top two teams in the standings face each other in Qualifier 1, where the winner earns a direct ticket to the final. Meanwhile, the losing side gets another opportunity through Qualifier 2, making a top-two finish a massive advantage compared to teams finishing third or fourth, who must survive the knockout Eliminator.

However, only six of the ten team still remain mathematically alive in the race for those coveted top-two positions. Here’s a closer look at which teams are still in contention and what they need to do from here.

Six teams still alive in race for top-two finish

Currently, only Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Punjab Kings (PBKS), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Gujarat Titans (GT), and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) can still mathematically finish inside the top two spots.

League leaders SRH are currently in the strongest position and need to win at least two of their remaining three matches to almost secure a top-two berth.

PBKS, who are currently second on the table, still have four league games left and are likely to require at least three victories to maintain their place among the top two.

RCB, sitting third, also needs to win three of their remaining four matches to strengthen their chances of earning the Qualifier 1 advantage.

RR and GT remain firmly in the mix as well. Both teams are expected to require three wins from their last four matches to realistically challenge for a top-two finish.

Meanwhile, CSK faces the toughest road among the six contenders. The five-time champions likely need to win all four of their remaining league games to stay alive in the race for a top-two finish.

With the margins becoming thinner with every game, net run rate could also emerge as a decisive factor in determining the final standings, setting up a thrilling finish to the IPL 2026 league phase.
