CSK hammered MI by 103 runs in their IPL 2026 clash

MI were bundled out for 104 while chasing a 208-run target

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) rode on Sanju Samson's century and Akeal Hosein's four-fer to hand a 103-run shellacking to Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede stadium on April 23.

Sanju Samson-Akeal Hosein steer CSK to huge win over MI

Batting first, CSK posted a big total of 207/6, thanks to Sanju Samson's 54-ball 101. In reply, MI never looked settled in the chase and kept on losing wickets until they were bundled out for 104, courtesy to Akeal Hosein's 4/17.

With this win CSK rocketed to fifth spot in the IPL 2026 points table with six points.

Chennai Super Kings’ 103-run victory over the Mumbai Indians was a historic affair, establishing a new benchmark as CSK’s largest margin of victory by runs in IPL history. This clinical performance eclipsed their previous record of a 97-run win against the Punjab Kings, set back in 2015. Conversely, it was a night to forget for Mumbai; the 103-run deficit stands as their heaviest defeat by runs in the tournament's history, surpassing an 87-run loss to the Rajasthan Royals in 2013 and a 39-run defeat at the Wankhede against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2015. Furthermore, Mumbai's total of 104 was their lowest ever against Chennai, and the result solidified CSK’s recent dominance, with five wins in their last six encounters against MI since 2023.

Mumbai’s chase falters against disciplined CSK attack

Chasing a formidable target of 208, MI endured a disastrous start. The collapse began in the very first over when left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein dismissed opener Danish Malewar for a golden duck. By the second over, seamer Mukesh Choudhary had clean bowled Quinton de Kock for 7, and in the third, Hosein struck again to remove Naman Dhir for a three-ball duck. These early blows left Mumbai reeling at 11/3. While Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav managed a brief recovery to steady the ship, taking the score to 78/3 by the end of the 10th over, the momentum shifted once again when Hosein cleaned up Tilak Varma, who had fought valiantly for 37 off 29 balls.

The Mumbai innings then disintegrated completely following the departure of Varma. In the 13th over, leg-spinner Noor Ahmad delivered a devastating double blow, removing captain Hardik Pandya for just 1 and Sherfane Rutherford for a golden duck on consecutive deliveries, leaving Mumbai in deep trouble at 87/6. The wickets continued to fall rapidly as Hosein returned in the 14th over to claim his fourth wicket of the match, accounting for the resilient Suryakumar Yadav, who departed for 36 off 30 balls.

The tail-end offered little resistance as the Mumbai innings folded for 104. Jamie Overton dismissed Krish Bhagat to reduce the hosts to 100/8, and shortly after, Anshul Kamboj claimed the wicket of Shardul Thakur. Gurjapneet Singh eventually ended the match by dismissing Jasprit Bumrah, sealing a one-sided victory for the Super Kings. It was a clinical team effort with the ball; Akeal Hosein led the way with brilliant figures of 4/17, while Noor Ahmad (2/24), Mukesh Choudhary, Anshul Kamboj, Jamie Overton, and Gurjapneet Singh all chipped in with vital wickets to secure the comprehensive win.

Samson's ton in CSK's huge win

Earlier, Samson delivered a scintillating performance, scoring a masterful unbeaten 101 off 54 balls to guide CSK to a commanding total of 207/6 against MI. Striking at 187.04 with 10 fours and 6 sixes, Samson’s innings was the highlight of the match. This performance marked his fifth IPL century, placing him joint-fourth on the all-time list alongside KL Rahul, and trailing only Virat Kohli (8), Jos Buttler (7), and Chris Gayle (6). Notably, it was the first individual century ever scored by a CSK batter against Mumbai in IPL history.

After the Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to bowl, Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad got CSK off to an aggressive start. The pair dominated the Powerplay, racing to 73 runs in the first six overs—the second-highest Powerplay score for CSK against MI in IPL history. Although Gaikwad fell for 22 off 14 balls in the third over to Allah Ghazanfar, the momentum remained firmly with the Super Kings as they continued to attack both pace and spin.

Despite the aggressive tempo, CSK encountered a few setbacks in the middle overs. Sarfaraz Khan, who chipped in with 14, was dismissed by Mitchell Santner, while Shivam Dube departed for just 5, falling to Ghazanfar in the ninth over. Samson, however, maintained his composure and brought up his fifty in just 26 balls. Supported by a cameo from Dewald Brevis, who contributed 21 before falling to Ashwani Kumar in the 11th over, Samson anchored the innings. By the 15-over mark, the Super Kings were well-positioned at 149-4.

The closing stages saw a mix of resistance and aggression. Samson targeted young seamer Krish Bhagat for 15 runs in a single over, though Jasprit Bumrah struck back for Mumbai by removing Kartik Sharma for 18. Jamie Overton added a quick 15 before being dismissed by Ashwani Kumar in the 18th over. Jasprit Bumrah then delivered a clinical penultimate over, conceding just 10 runs and finishing with figures of 1/31. Ultimately, Samson took charge in the final over, smashing 16 runs to propel Chennai comfortably past the 200-run mark, which was too much for the Paltans, who are now reeling at the eighth spot in the standings.
