CSK successfully defended the target of 213

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) recorded their first win in the IPL 2026 after hat-trick of defeats as they thrashed Delhi Capitals (DC) by 23 runs at the MA Chidambaram stadium on March 11. CSK first rode on Sanju Samson's blistering century to post a big total of 212/2. In reply, DC were bowled out for 189, thanks to Jamie Overton's fiery four-fer.

Jamie Overton breaks DC's back

Chasing a daunting target of 213, Delhi initially signaled a fightback with a blistering start. Openers KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka combined for a rapid 61-run partnership in just five overs, putting the CSK bowlers on the defensive early in the powerplay. However, the momentum shifted abruptly with the dismissal of Nissanka for 41. Despite receiving a reprieve when Khaleel Ahmed dropped a catch off Anshul Kamboj, Nissanka failed to capitalize on the life. On the very next delivery, he mistimed a shot off the same bowler, spooning a catch to Dewald Brevis at the edge of the circle. While DC remained in a competitive position at 61/2 after 5.2 overs, the Chennai bowling unit quickly pivoted to a more aggressive tactical approach.

Exploiting the nature of the red-soil pitch, the pace trio of Craig Overton, Khaleel Ahmed, and Anshul Kamboj began hitting the deck hard. By extracting extra bounce and bashing the ball into the surface, they effectively cramped the Delhi batters, making it nearly impossible to find room for big hits. This pressure told quickly as Sameer Rizvi and Axar Patel fell to the rising deliveries. Axar’s exit was particularly spectacular, thanks to a stunning, full-length diving catch by Sarfaraz Khan at point. The Capitals still held hope with big hitters David Miller and Tristan Stubbs in the middle order, but the comeback never materialized. Overton delivered the final blow to Delhi’s aspirations by hitting a perfect hard length that clipped Miller’s leg-stump bails. This dismissal effectively ended the Capitals' resistance, leaving them well short of the target and cementing a dominant turnaround for the Super Kings.

Sanju Samson lights up Chepauk with robust century

Earlier, Samson delivered a batting masterclass, silencing any lingering doubts about his recent form. In a high-stakes match, Samson notched his fourth IPL century, anchoring CSK to a massive total of 212/2. After a string of disappointing scores, the Indian star found his rhythm in the Yellow Jersey, exploding for 115 runs off just 56 deliveries. His innings, characterized by a phenomenal strike rate of 205.36, featured 15 boundaries and 4 towering sixes that left the Delhi bowling attack visibly rattled. After opting to bat first, CSK faced an early setback when captain Ruturaj Gaikwad fell for 15.

However, Samson immediately took control of the game during the powerplay, eventually finding a steady partner in 17-year-old sensation Ayush Mhatre. The duo dismantled the opposition, with Mhatre contributing a fearless 59 off 36 balls. In a savvy tactical shift during the 18th over, Mhatre was "retired out" to bring in the explosive Shivam Dube, who added a quick-fire 20 to the total. Despite the late-inning maneuvers, the night belonged entirely to Samson. He reached his hundred in 52 balls with a boundary off T Natarajan, sparking a thunderous standing ovation from the Chepauk faithful. His masterclass has set a daunting target for the Capitals and firmly re-established his dominance in the tournament.
