Suryakumar Yadav's record-breaking half-century went in vain as Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab Kings (PBKS) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by seven wickets in their last league match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. With this win, PBKS confirmed their spot in the top two, and they have sealed their berth for the qualifiers of the 18th edition of the cash-rich league.
Captain Shreyas Iyer (26 not out off 16) hit a six off Trent Boult to complete a dominating win. Punjab Kings, who have made the playoffs for the first time since 2014, now travel back to their home ground in Mullanpur for Qualifier 1, scheduled on May 29.
The architect of Punjab's win was the batting duo of Arya and Inglis. The highlight of Arya's third fifty of the season was his ability to gauge the situation and play sensibly when Inglis was going ballistic at the other end.
While chasing 185 runs, PBKS were off to a bad start as Prabhsimran Singh departed in the fifth over after his wicket. Inglis joined Priyansh Arya for the chase and the duo stitched a 109-run partnership before Jasprit Bumrah picked his wicket 15th over. After Priyansh (62 off 35), Iyer joined Inglis for the chase. Inglis departed in the 18th over, and Nehal Wadhera joined Iyer for the chase. Iyer finished off the proceedings with a six in the nineteenth over.

After being asked to bat, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya helped MI to put 84 for seven despite a decent bowling effort from PBKS. Suryakumar (57 off 39 balls), who has been a picture of consistency this season, broke Sachin Tendulkar's record to become the highest run scorer for the Mumbai outfit in an IPL season.
Ryan Rickelton's (27 off 20) sublime strokes helped MI to score 52 for one in the powerplay. PBKS star Arshdeep Singh swung the ball both ways in the opening over of the game, troubling Rickelton who managed to survive. In the following over, Rickelton got a couple of boundaries from Kyle Jamieson, who was making his debut for Punjab Kings.
Another opener, Rohit Sharma (24 off 21), was slow off the blocks before a straight hit over mid-off against Marco Jansen got him going. Jansen, playing his final game of the season for PBKS, induced a mishit from Rickelton that had the opener caught at mid-on in the sixth over.
As Yuzvendra Chahal missed the clash, left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar was up to the task again in the middle overs and got the prized wicket of Rohit, whose mishit was brilliantly pouched by Nehal Wadhera at long-on.
At 106 for four in the 13th over, PBKS controlled the proceedings. Hardik would have been out on the first legal ball he faced, but Vijaykumar Vyshak dropped the catch.
However, Vyshak played a crucial role in restricting MI before 200 by Will Jacks and Tilak Varma in quick succession.
Brief scores:
Mumbai Indians: 184/7 in 20 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 57; Arshdeep Singh 2/28, Marco Jansen 2/34, Vijaykumar Vyshak 2/44).
Punjab Kings: 187/3 in 18.3 overs (Priyansh Arya 62, Josh Inglis 73; Mitchell Santner 2/41).
