Rajasthan Royals' stand-in captain Riyan Parag exhaled with relief when the Rajasthan Royals won their first IPL 2025 match on their third try. Rajasthan defeated Chennai Super Kings in their final home game in Guwahati following a thrilling match on Sunday. Earlier, they faced defeats against the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad, in their opening match on Wednesday. However, Parag received a substantial fine for breaching an IPL rule during the game.
Riyan Parag fined for slow over rate
After the Rajasthan Royals maintained a slow over-rate against Chennai at the Barsapara Stadium, the BCCI punished Parag on Monday. According to Article 2.22 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate infractions, Parag was charged INR 12 lakhs because it was the team's first offence of the current season. Mumbai Indians' Hardik Pandya received a similar sanction during their encounter against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on Saturday, in which MI suffered a humiliating 36-run loss. Parag became the second skipper to be penalized for a slow over-rate.

After MI violated the IPL Code of Conduct twice during the 2024 season, Hardik was previously suspended for one game. As a result, he was unable to play in Mumbai's IPL 2025 season opener against the Chennai Super Kings. Ahead of the current tournament, the BCCI did state that captains will now receive demerit points depending on the seriousness of the offense rather than being banned if their team continues to sustain a slow over-rate.
Sri Lanka wrist spinner Wanindu Hasaranga exposed Chennai's spin problems once again with final figures of 4 for 35. As CSK struggled in the chase, Sandeep Sharma defended 20 runs in the last over, including dismissing MS Dhoni. Nitish Rana was the top batsman earlier. The Royals reached a par score thanks to his helpful half-century knock, which their bowlers effectively defended. At Chandigarh's Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Cricket Stadium, Rajasthan will next play the Punjab Kings.
