The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is set to commence on March 22. Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the season opener. Before the T20 extravaganza begins, do you know that so far there have been 15 IPL franchises? Five of them are not part of the 10-team tournament and only one of those -- Deccan Chargers -- went on to win the trophy. While Chargers were one of the original eight teams to get terminated, the other seven are still playing and three of them are trophy-less. Here's a look at all 10 team's performances over the years -
Rajasthan Royals
Under the leadership of Shane Warne, Rajasthan Royals were the first to win the IPL trophy. The following four seasons, they could not make it to playoffs. In 2013, they made it to playoffs again and then finished fifth. IN 2015, they made it to playoffs as well before facing a two-season suspension. On their return, they made it to playoffs again. After three lacklustre seasons, under the leadership of Sanju Samson, they made it to the final after a decade and a half. They narrowly missed the playoffs in 2023 but made it to the playoffs in 2024 only to get knocked out.
Chennai Super Kings
Chennai Super Kings have won five IPL titles and are labelled as the most consistent franchises. In the inaugural edition, they made it to the finals. In the next edition, they were knocked out of semifinals. MS Dhoni led them to title wins in 2010 and 2011. They made it to the final in 2012 and 2013 but lost. In 2014, they made it to the playoffs but were knocked out. In the following season, they faced their fourth defeat in the final. After serving a two-year suspension, they came back roaring and won the championship. They continued their consistent run but lost their fifth final in 2019. The firs time they did not make it to playoffs was in 2020. In 2021, they became champions again and then finished ninth as change in leadership did not work for them. In 2023, they won their fifth title. Last season, they narrowly missed the playoffs spot.
Kolkata Knight Riders
Kolkata Knight Riders kicked off IPL with a bang as Brendon McCullum scored 158. However, they could not make it to playoffs for first three seasons. In 2011, they made it to the playoffs but were knocked out. In 2012, Gautam Gambhir led them to their maiden title win. In the next edition, they finished seventh. But, in 2014, they became champions again under Gambhir. In 2015, they missed the playoffs spot by a whisker. Then, they made it to the playoffs for third consecutive seasons but did not progress. In 2019 and 2020 editions, they finished fifth. In 2021, they played the final against CSK and lost. They followed it up with two seventh-place finishing. After a decade, Shreyas Iyer led them to the title win before he was released.
Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians have always been a star-studded side. In the first two seasons, they did not qualify for the playoffs. In 2010, they finished runner-ups as they lost to CSK. In next two seasons, they were knocked out of playoffs. In 2013, Rohit Sharma-led MI defeated CSK to claim their maiden title. In the next season, they were beaten in the playoffs. In 2015, they became champions again. Then, the finished fifth. Then, in 2017, they became champions. They followed it up with another fifth-place finish. In 2019 and 2020, they dominated and won the title. They narrowly missed the playoffs berth in 2021. In 2022, the finished at the bottom for the first time. Next season, they made it to playoffs. Then, Hardik Pandya-led side finished 10th in previous edition.
Sunrisers Hyderabad
After Deccan Chargers franchise was terminated, Sunrisers Hyderabad made their IPL debut in 2013 edition. They made it to playoffs in 2013 and then finished sixth for two consecutive seasons. Under David Warner, they won their maiden IPL title beating Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). They made it to the playoffs next season. In 2018, they were beaten by CSK in the final. They made it to the pplayoffs in 2019 and 2020. They finished eighth in next two seasons. In 2023, they finished at the bottom. Pat Cummins led them to the final previous season where they lost to KKR.
Gujarat Titans
Gujarat Titans were introduced in IPL 2022. Before the Titans, the Gujarat-based franchise was Gujarat Lions which was introduced for two seasons only. In their maiden season, GT won the trophy under Hardik Pandya. In the next season, they were runner-ups as CSK got the better of them. After Pandya left the franchise, Shubman Gill-led GT finished eighth last season.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru
RCB had a poor start as they finished seventh in the inaugural edition. In second season, they made it to the finals but lost to Deccan Chargers. In the third season, they finished third. In 2011, they made it to the final again but were beaten. From 2012 to 2014, the could not make it to the playoffs. In 2015, they made it to the playoffs. The Virat Kohli-led team made it to their third final but were beaten by SRH. The next three seasons, they could not make it to the playoffs. Kohli led them to two consecutive playoffs before stepping down as captain. When Faf du Plessis took over as captain, they qualified for playoffs but were knocked out again. In IPL 2023, they finished sixth. In the previous season, RCB made a miraculous comeback and pipped CSK to take the fourth playoffs spot. But they could not replicate the success in the knockout stage.
Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals (formerly known as Delhi Daredevils) were consistent in the first two seasons making it to the semifinals. In 2010, they narrowly missed the last four spot. In 2011, the finished at the bottom. In 2012, they advanced to the playoff stage. From 2013 to 2018, they had a poor run and could not progress to the playoffs stage. In 2019, Shreyas Iyer led them to the playoffs after a long time. However, it was in 2020, they made it to their first IPL final where MI beat them. They made it to the playoffs again in 2021. In the last three seasons, they have not made it past the league stage.
Punjab Kings
Punjab Kings have often looked good on paper but haven't been able to execute well. In the inaugural edition, they qualified for the semifinals. In the next five seasons, they could not get past the league stage. In 2014, they made it to the final but were beaten by KKR. Since the, Kings XI Punjab have renamed themselves as Punjab Kings and changed many captains but it hasn't changed their fate. Since 2014, they have not made it the playoffs.
Lucknow Super Giants
With Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants were introduced into IPL in 2022 edition. Under KL Rahul's leadership, they were consistent and made it to playoffs for first two seasons. However, in 2024, they were timid in their approach and finished seventh. As a result, Rahul was let go and LSG roped in Rishabh Pant as their captain.
