Out-of-favour India batter Prithvi Shaw is going through a struggling phase in his cricketing career. At the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, he was unable to get any bidders. The skipper of the 2018 U-19 World Cup was viewed as the next big thing in Indian cricket, but his recent failures have eliminated him from consideration for the Indian squad. The reality that Shaw will not be participating in the IPL next season has gotten worse. His name was mentioned twice during the auction, but not a single paddle was raised for him, even though the base price was Rs 75 lakh.
The right-handed batter will not play in an IPL season for the first time since his debut in 2018. In addition to his lack of form, Shaw has drawn a lot of criticism from analysts and former Indian cricket players for his conduct and level of fitness. His progress has now been questioned by a former India selector.
"Prithvi has been in Delhi Capitals. In DC itself, he had a chance to interact with Rahul Dravid, who was also his U-19 India coach, Ricky Ponting, Sourav Ganguly," a former India selector, who has watched Shaw from close quarters told PTI.
"It's an open secret in Mumbai cricket that Tendulkar has also spoken to him. Are these legends fools? Do you see any change in him? Even if there is, it is not evident," he added.
Shaw, who had burst into the collective consciousness of Indian fans with his boyish charm and a game to match, attracted no attention at all at the IPL 2025 auction. However, six years is a long time, and Shaw is currently at a turning point in his career after being rejected by the IPL. Depending on what he decides to do with his talent, it could either take off or fail.
The adage "perception travels quicker than light" applies to Indian cricket, and in Shaw's case, nothing good is coming from anywhere. Even the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) had dropped him from the Ranji Trophy squad prior to calling him back for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
