Rohit Sharma concluded his Test career on May 7, with just over a month remaining before India's tour of England which will mark the team's first assignment in the 2025-2027 cycle of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC).
The 25-year-old took to social media to convey that Rohit Sharma has served as an inspiration for both his teammates and his adversaries on the field.
“India is grateful for what you have done in Tests as a player and a captain You’ve been an absolute inspiration to me and everyone that has played with or against you. There are things that I’ve learnt from you that I am going to remember forever,” Gill wrote.
"Happy retirement to Rohit Sharma, one of the best captains that I’ve played under. Thank you Cap!,” Gill's post further read.

Shubman Gill, an established member of the Indian cricket team across all formats of the game, was appointed as Rohit Sharma's vice-captain in the One-Day International (ODI) format prior to the Champions Trophy, a tournament that India ultimately won.
Rohit's departure has created a void and BCCI will be looking fill it as soon as possible ahead of India's five-match Test series against England, which is set to start from June 20. Now reports are doing rounds that Gill is leading the race to become India's new Test captain.
However, Shubman Gill has yet to establish a consistent track record of success in overseas Test tours. His most significant performances in the longest format have primarily been on the subcontinent. His most notable overseas tour to date remains his debut series, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia during the 2020-21 season.
Shubman Gill has featured in 32 Test matches so far, accumulating 1,893 runs at an average of 35.05. His Test record includes seven half-centuries and five centuries. Notably, the right-handed batsman had a less successful Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, managing only 93 runs across five innings, with his highest score being 31 in the first innings of the Adelaide Test.
