CSK were knocked out of the IPL 2026 after suffering 89-run defeat at the hands of GT

Now, R Ashwin has called for massive overhaul in CSK squad

Following their humiliating 89-run defeat against Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad, which abruptly halted their IPL 2026 campaign, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) find themselves at a critical crossroads. Speaking on the aftermath of the blowout loss, veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin stressed that the franchise can no longer afford to rely on the traditional blueprint that brought them prolonged success during the MS Dhoni era. Instead, he insists the team must undergo a sweeping overhaul in both its tactical strategy and overall squad construction to remain competitive.

According to Ashwin, the current roster lacks the necessary balance, depth, and seasoned leadership required to navigate the high-stakes pressures of the tournament. While he acknowledged the excitement and potential surrounding Chennai's influx of young talent, he emphasized that raw promise alone cannot replace the value of proven quality. To return to their winning ways, Ashwin believes CSK must actively prioritise recruiting experienced, high-caliber players who can anchor the team across all departments, signaling that the time has come for the franchise to evolve past its historical formulas.

“Honestly, I will say this openly, CSK has to invest in quality. They have to invest in quality cricketers. I mean, make a quality team. With experience. Bowling experience. Variety in fast bowlers. Variety in spinners. A team has to be formed in a good way,” said Ashwin on his YouTube channel.

“Young talent, exuberance of youth, as Ravi (Shastri) bhai says, it excites. But along with that, if there is experience in your team, that is a lethal combination. This is not Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings. Not at all. That time has changed. And you have to keep in mind that success will come. But it will come slowly,” he added.

I think the squad that is picked to play in their home game, in Chepauk: R Ashwin

The veteran off-spinner raised critical questions regarding CSK's recruitment strategy, doubting whether the current squad was genuinely built to thrive in the unique conditions of Chepauk, a venue that historically served as the bedrock of the franchise's dominance. He pointed out a fundamental mismatch between the team's composition and their home turf, suggesting that the roster lacks the specific tactical identity needed to exploit the ground's traditionally spin-friendly and slower tracks.

According to Ashwin, succeeding on the challenging Chennai surface requires a brand of cricket rooted in patience, sharp game awareness, and elite adaptability. He emphasized that the venue demands batsmen who can meticulously construct an innings and manipulate fields, rather than a lineup reliant solely on raw power hitting. By pivoting away from the specialized profiles that once made them unbeatable at home, Ashwin believes CSK effectively surrendered their formidable home-court advantage.

“Actually, honestly speaking, Shivam Dube’s batting was very positive for Chennai. But I have an observation. I think the squad that is picked to play in their home game, in Chepauk, I think it is not suiting them. Whenever I think of Badrinath, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, Shane Watson, Michael Hussey — players like them — I feel that to bat in Chepauk’s conditions, you have to do a little attritional batting. You don’t have a wicket to hit through the line like this,” he concluded.
