Tensions flared up during Indian Premier League League (IPL) 2025 between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at he Ekana Cricket stadium on May 19.
Abhishek Sharma, Digvesh Rathi embroiled in animated verbal spat
Cricket matches occasionally witness on-field confrontations, and LSG's mystery spinner Digvesh Singh Rathi appears to be the latest addition to the list of players known for such incidents. Rathi has been repeatedly cautioned by IPL governing officials, incurring fines, and gained notoriety during IPL 2025 for his signature 'Notebook' celebration. He performed this celebration once again on Monday after dismissing the explosive SRH batter Abhishek Sharma.
Abhishek Sharma, however, took exception to Rathi's celebration following his dismissal. This led to a heated verbal exchange between the two players, escalating the tension during the match. Fortunately, the on-field umpire, Michael Gough, intervened promptly, separating the two agitated individuals before the situation could escalate further, and order was soon restored.
While Abhishek Sharma's blistering innings of 59 runs off 20 balls, comprising four boundaries and six maximums, had set a strong platform for SRH, the runners-up of IPL 2024 suffered a setback with the dismissal of the well-set Ishan Kishan.
It was Digvesh Singh Rathi who provided the crucial breakthrough for LSG, who face the risk of being eliminated from the IPL playoffs race if they lose this match against SRH.
However, in the end SRH had the last laugh as they chased down the 206-run target with six wickets and 10 balls to spare to end LSG's campaign in the IPL 2025.
