In a significant boost for Mumbai Indians fans, head coach Mahela Jayawardene has confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah has rejoined the squad and is fully available for the IPL 2026 season. This update comes at a perfect time for the franchise as they begin their pursuit of a record sixth IPL title. The team is set to open their campaign at the Wankhede Stadium this Sunday, March 29, in a high-profile clash against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Jasprit Bumrah will play the MI vs KKR clash
The pacer's availability had been a point of concern for supporters after he was noticeably absent from the initial pre-season camp following India's victorious 2026 T20 World Cup run. Bumrah was instrumental in that championship victory, finishing as the tournament's joint-highest wicket-taker with 14 dismissals. While his international teammates joined their respective IPL camps immediately after the final, Bumrah instead traveled to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence, sparking rumors regarding his physical fitness.

However, speculation of a new injury was quickly put to rest, as his time at the Centre of Excellence was revealed to be part of a sophisticated workload management strategy. According to reports from ESPNcricinfo, the BCCI medical team designed a bespoke strength and conditioning program specifically for Bumrah to ensure he remains in peak condition. This proactive approach aims to balance his IPL commitments with India's upcoming heavy international schedule, most notably the high-stakes white-ball tour of England scheduled for July.
"On Jassi (Jasprit Bumrah). He's back with the squad. He's available to play. That's it,” said Jayawardene in the press conference.
While Jasprit Bumrah’s return is a massive relief, the Mumbai Indians’ camp is still not at full strength as they prepare for the Kolkata Knight Riders. Key overseas all-rounders Will Jacks and Mitchell Santner have yet to link up with the squad, and their absence will be felt in the season opener. According to reports, Santner is expected to arrive in India shortly following his recent international commitments with New Zealand, while Jacks is likely to join the team about a week late due to personal reasons. Jayawardene addressed these missing pieces with a sense of calm during the pre-match press conference, noting that such delays were bound to happen given the high-intensity buildup to the 2026 T20 World Cup. He explained that the franchise had already factored these scenarios into their seasonal planning, emphasizing that the team is well-prepared to adapt. In the meantime, MI is expected to look toward players like Sherfane Rutherford or young Afghan spinner Allah Ghazanfar to fill those vital gaps and maintain the squad's balance at the Wankhede.
“The buildup to the World Cup was quite intense as well. I mean, there was a lot of cricket played. There were a couple of Test series going on as well before that. And then leading up to the T20 World Cup, there were a lot of bilateral tournaments. The workloads of some of them, most of them are bowlers who needed that bit of extra week, and then the World Cup itself was quite high intensity, travelling, playing. So that's part and parcel of it, and we knew that, going into this IPL, there'll be those kinds of situations, so we just have to manage that," Jayawardene added.
