England's batting coach Marcus Trescothick will not be involved in the third Test match against Sri Lanka. According to reports from ESPNCricinfo, he is taking a short break before assuming his role as interim white-ball head coach for the upcoming series against Australia.
Marcus Trescothick takes a break from England coaching duties
Trescothick was appointed as the interim white-ball head coach following the resignation of Matthew Mott. He is tasked with leading the team through the ODI and T20I series against Australia as the ECB searches for a permanent coach. In Trescothick's absence, Andrew Flintoff will link up with England coaching staff for the third Test against Sri Lanka. Flintoff, a former all-rounder, has been a part of the team's white-ball coaching setup and was also involved in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Andrew Flintoff's role in England's coaching staff
Andrew Flintoff will not be involved in the white-ball series against Australia due to reported tensions with Jos Buttler during the T20 World Cup 2024. Given these circumstances, it is unlikely that he will be given a more extended role within the white-ball coaching setup. Flintoff will join the team for the third Test against Sri Lanka, participating in two days of training before the match. He will be part of Brendon McCullum's coaching staff throughout the Test but is not expected to be involved in the upcoming winter tours of Pakistan and New Zealand.
Marcus Trescothick, who is currently coaching the England Test team, will be taking a short break after the conclusion of the second Test against Sri Lanka at Lord's. He will then rejoin the team ahead of the first T20I against Australia, which is scheduled to take place on September 11 at the Utilita Bowl near Southampton.
Marcus Trescothick's coaching team and future ambitions
Marcus Trescothick will be supported by the same coaching staff that worked with Matthew Mott. Additionally, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has appointed Michael Yardy, the Under-19s coach, to join the team for the white-ball series against Australia. When asked about his interest in applying for the permanent white-ball head coach role, Trescothick expressed that his primary focus is currently on the Test team. He stated that he would evaluate his experience and performance during the Australia series before making a decision on whether to pursue the permanent position. Trescothick explained his thoughts in an interview with Sky Sports.
"I'm still very focused on the batting stuff with the Test team. I'm going to let this play out and see what happens for this period of time, and see how much I enjoy doing the head coach's role and then go from there really. I'm quite open to the idea of seeing what's going to happen," he told Sky Sports.
