Veteran pacer Andrew Tye has announced his BBL retirement

Tye's decision came right ahead of Melbourne Renegades vs Perth Scorchers clash

At 39 years old, veteran Australian fast bowler Andrew Tye has officially announced his retirement from the Big Bash League (BBL). His final appearance is set for a sentimental showdown between the Melbourne Renegades and his long-time former team, the Perth Scorchers. While his time in the Australian domestic circuit is drawing to a close, Tye isn't hanging up the boots entirely; he has secured a significant two-year deal to play for Yorkshire in England's Vitality Blast.

Andrew Tye retires from BBL

Tye’s BBL journey began in 2013, eventually seeing him become a synonymous figure with the Perth Scorchers. Interestingly, his career has come full circle across several major clubs: he originally started with the Sydney Thunder, spent his prime years in Perth, and is now set to bowl his final delivery in a Renegades jersey. Born in 1986, the Western Australian product took a scenic route to the top, playing junior domestic cricket before making his professional debut at the relatively late age of 26.

After three impressive years on the domestic circuit, Tye made his debut for the Australian national team at age 29. He went on to represent his country in both white-ball formats, earning 7 ODI caps and featuring in 32 T20Is, where his signature knuckleball became a trademark weapon against some of the world's best batters.

Tye leaves the Big Bash League as one of its most decorated icons. During the 2021-22 season, he etched his name into the record books as the first Perth Scorchers bowler to reach the 100-wicket milestone. He concludes his BBL tenure as the second-highest wicket-taker in the league's history with a staggering 162 wickets, ensuring his legacy as one of the most effective 'death bowlers' the competition has ever seen.

Andrew Tye's time with Perth Scorchers comes to an end

Andrew Tye’s tenure with the Perth Scorchers stands as one of the most prolific stints in T20 history. A consistent threat in every edition of the tournament, he ultimately claimed 159 wickets for the franchise. His peak performance came during the 2022/23 season, where he set a new personal benchmark by taking 26 wickets, narrowly eclipsing his own previous record of 25 dismissals from the 2021/22 campaign.

While his chapter in Australian domestic cricket is closing, Tye is prepared for a fresh challenge in the United Kingdom. He has committed to a two-year contract with the English County side Yorkshire, where he will bring his vast experience and tactical variations to the upcoming Vitality Blast T20 competitions.

"Everyone saw a post regarding my signing with the Yorkshire Team for the Vitality T20 Blast, but what that post did not mention was that I have signed as a local player, which means this will be my last season in the BBL," Tye said in his retirement statement.

Andrew Tye's career in short

Tye’s statistical footprint spans all formats of the game. On the international stage for Australia, he claimed 47 T20I wickets and 12 ODI scalps. Beyond the white-ball spotlight, he proved his red-ball and 50-over credentials in the domestic circuit, finishing with 27 First-Class wickets and 148 List A wickets to his name. His career is a roadmap of global T20 cricket, having competed in the Big Bash League, Major League Cricket, the PSL, and the IPL. During his five seasons in the Indian Premier League, Tye's versatility was sought after by four different franchises: the Gujarat Lions, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, and Lucknow Super Giants. Across a massive 249 matches in the shortest format, Tye has amassed 343 wickets, including three five-wicket hauls and career-best figures of 5/17.
