According to reports, the PCB has lost faith in Shaheen Afridi and Shan Masood.

Babar Azam stepped down from captaincy after the 2023 ODI World Cup.

There seems to be no end to the internal turmoil in Pakistan cricket and the latest turn of events have surprised even the most ardent followers of the sport. According to a report in PTI, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) wants superstar Babar Azam to once again become the captain of the country's senior men's national cricket team, a few months after he decided to relinquish the responsibility following the team's poor performance in back-to-back multi-national tournaments (Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup).
If reports are to be believed, the decision-makers of the PCB have lost faith in Shaheen Afridi, who is Pakistan's T20I captain, and Shan Masood, who is Pakistan's Test captain, to lead the country. The higher-ups within the PCB are now looking to re-appoint Babar Azam as the captain of the team and a proposal for the same has already been sent to the superstar batter.

"The funny part is that the powers that be appear to have lost faith in Shan Masood and Shaheen Shah Afridi's ability to lead the national side in Test and T20 formats with the change in the board's chairmanship," PTI quoted a source as saying.

"Feelers have been sent out to Babar to find out if he is ready to take charge again and he has shown some reservations. Apparently, he wants some assurances from the board chairman," the source added.

Shaheen Afridi, Shan Masood failed to impress

Under the leadership of Shaheen Afridi, Pakistan were comprehensively beaten in the five-match T20I series by New Zealand earlier in the year. The Men in Green could manage to win only one match while losing four matches. Thus, Afridi's record as Pakistan's captain in the shortest format of the game is abysmal, to say the least, albeit in a small sample size.

On the other hand, Shan Masood's captaincy started on a tough tour to Australia, and Pakistan ended up losing all three matches against the Baggy Greens.
