West Indies cricket team will arrive in India for a white-ball series comprising three ODIs and as many T20Is next month. On January 22, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a change in venues for the upcoming West Indies’ tour of India scheduled to start from February 6.

The three ODIs will now be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad followed by three T20Is at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The decision to limit the series to two venues instead of six (originally announced) has been done to mitigate Covid-19 risks by cutting down on travel and movement of the teams, match officials, broadcasters, and other stakeholders.

Indian white-ball captain Rohit Sharma, who suffered a hamstring injury ahead of the South Africa departure, is expected to make a comeback for the sox-match series against West Indies at home.

“Rohit’s rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) is going pretty well. He is expected to be okay for the West Indies series.

“It’s still close to three weeks from now before the first ODI is played in Ahmedabad on February 6,” a BCCI source said.

The ODI series will begin from February 6 in Ahmedabad. Earlier, the second ODI was supposed to be played in Jaipur on February 9 and the third ODI in Kolkata on February 12. Also, the three T20Is were scheduled to be played in Cuttack, Visakhapatnam, and Thiruvananthapuram respectively.

BCCI had earlier hinted that they would look to host the series at just one venue instead of six. With the third wave of Covid-19 nearing its peak, BCCI have finally decided to limit travel.

BCCI also announced that the next edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) will begin from the last week of March. The tournament will be played without spectators for the third straight season since 2020. The IPL will most likely be held in India. However, BCCI has kept South Africa and UAE as backup options too for the season featuring 10 teams.
