Ben Stokes was recently dropped from England's ongoing 2nd Test against New Zealand

Ben Stokes has been included in Durham’s 15-man squad for their upcoming County Championship match against Northamptonshire. The selection follows his high-profile omission from the England second for the ongoing Test against New Zealand at the Kia Oval. Having spent the week training at Chester-le-Street under Durham head coach Ryan Campbell, Stokes appears fully primed to take the field this Friday despite the turmoil surrounding his international standing.

The 35-year-old's exclusion from the national side stems from a serious breach of team protocols. Both Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson are currently the subjects of twin investigations by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Cricket Regulator. The inquiry was triggered after the duo allegedly broke curfew following the conclusion of the first Test at Lord’s. The situation is further complicated by reports that an ECB security staff member required stitches following an early-morning incident last Monday, which also reportedly involved a Saracens academy rugby player. Consequently, both cricketers face potential charges of bringing the sport into disrepute.

No clarity on Stokes' return to English side following nightclub row

While Stokes prepares for county action, his long-term future as England's Test captain remains shrouded in uncertainty. No definitive clarity has been provided regarding his leadership role, prompting the appointment of Joe Root as the stand-in skipper for the Oval Test. Meanwhile, Atkinson is also expected to return to domestic duties, with the bowler in contention to feature for Surrey in their match against Glamorgan in Cardiff as both players await the final verdicts of the ongoing disciplinary investigations.

Stokes’ highly anticipated return brings a welcome boost to Durham, recalling his last home appearance for the county against Worcestershire last season.

Meanwhile, Durham enter the clash with plenty of momentum, aiming to continue their impressive unbeaten start to the County Championship campaign. The squad has been in dominant form, racking up four victories and accumulating 126 points from their opening seven fixtures. This stellar run has been fueled by exceptional individual campaigns, most notably from batter David Bedingham, who has amassed 677 runs to sit as the division's second-highest run-scorer, and seamer Ben Raine, who currently shares the peak of the wicket-taking charts with 36 dismissals alongside veteran James Anderson.
