In an exclusive interview with Sports Tak, former Australia pacer Brett Lee underlines a few tweaks and changes injury-prone Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah can make to avoid injuries. Bumrah, who has an unconventional action when it comes to fast bowling, has suffered gruesome injuries during his career. With Bumrah being one of the best pacers in the world, Team India has felt his absence to a great degree.
Lee reckons that by adding a few more steps to his run-up, Bumrah will be able to generate the required speed from his legs which will reduce the load on his upper body.
"It's missing for India definitely (Bumrah's absence). He is a wonderful bowler and I wish him well and hope he recovers from his back. With a few little technical changes and by twisting his run-up, maybe that injury won't happen again," Lee opined.
"He just has to back himself. He has to have the right amount of preparation and the right amount of rest too. He is a wonderful bowler and my advice to him would be to increase his run-up a little bit and take pressure off his body because he generates his pace from that. He could get the pace by increasing his run-up. If he increases his run-up, then hopefully he will have lesser injuries," the former Australian pacer added.
Bumrah recently underwent a successful back surgery in New Zealand. The Mumbai Indians pacer, who has been out of cricket for quite a long time now, is expected to take around six months to recover and finally hit the nets.
Going by Bumrah's recovery time, he won't be able to play the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-2023 finals and the Asia Cup 2023, but he might be ready for the ODI World Cup, which India is set to host in October-November. Bumrah will miss the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL)
Bumrah has struggled with a troubled back since last year, which has kept him out of action from important assignments like the 2022 Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia. He has not played any competitive cricket since September last year.
