South African legend AB de Villiers lavished praise on Dewald Brevis after the batter smashed a 41-ball century in the second T20I against Australia at Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin. With his ton, Brevis becomes the first-ever visiting batter to smash a T20I century against Australia on home soil.
AB de Villiers, who recently featured in the World Champions of Legends (WCL) 2025, took to his 'X' (formerly known as Twitter) to praise the young batter who is being compared to him. De Villiers also revealed the Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) strategy for signing the batter as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh during the mid-season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
"There was such a golden opportunity for IPL teams to pick up Dewald Brevis at the auction! Missed out badly. CSK either got very lucky, or maybe the biggest master stroke ever👏 The boy can play @BrevisDewald" wrote AB de Villiers
Brevis also becomes the first batter to score a T20I century in Australia and South Africa clashes. Earlier, Hashim Amla holds the record for scoring an unbeaten 97 at Cape Town in 2016. He also smashed the highest T20I score by a South African batter. The previous record belonged to former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis, who scored 119 runs from 56 balls against the West Indies in 2015.
Highest individual scores in T20Is in Australia
125*Dewald Brevis vs Aus Darwin 2025
124*Shane Watson vs Ind Sydney 2016
120*Glenn Maxwell vs WI Adelaide 2024
Overall, Brevis is the second visiting batter to score a T20I century in Australia. The first to achieve the feat was New Zealand's Glenn Phillips, who scored 104 against Sri Lanka at Sydney Cricket Ground in the T20 World Cup 2022.
Coming back to the second T20I, Dewald Brevis' tremendous unbeaten 125-run knock helped South Africa to a daunting total of 218/7 in the second T20I. The visitors were off to a decent start in the poweplay; however, both of them were dismissed in quick succession. Lhuan-dre Pretorius didn't last long either as he threw his wicket away by running down the pitch against Glenn Maxwell. With those wickets, Australia shifted the momentum of the game, but Dewald Brevis played a counterattacking knock. The middle-order batter took his time to settle in, and when he had done that, he took on the bowlers, punishing them to all over the ground. In the process, Dewald notched up a spectacular century and the young batter also broke many records. Hazlewood had an off day as he conceded 56 runs in his 4 overs. Dwarshuis was the pick of the bowlers as he was economical and grabbed two wickets at the same time.
