Former India cricketer Shikhar Dhawan believes that domestic cricket plays an important role for players to regain their form after an injury or poor performance. India's star players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma recently made their comeback in domestic cricket after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made it compulsory for national players to feature for their states during their free time.
After India's 3-1 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, BCCI introduced a 10-point guideline aimed at addressing key concerns within the team where they introduced a new rule for domestic cricket.
"Absolutely, you should go and play," Dhawan said, speaking exclusively to ANI.
"If someone is coming back from an injury, they must prove their match fitness in domestic cricket. Take Shami [Mohammed], for example. He played a full domestic season to prove his fitness before returning to international cricket. That match sharpness is crucial," he added.
However, Dhawan also pointed out that when a player is on a short break it could affect his freshness.
"If a player is out of form, then yes, domestic cricket is the best way to regain rhythm but if someone has just finished an intense international tour and only has a five-day gap before the next one, playing in that short break could affect his freshness. It's important to manage that carefully," he said.
Indian star batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli who featured in their respective teams in the Ranji Trophy after more than a decade failed to score runs. The Men in Blue are currently featuring against England in the ODI series. After finishing the white ball series against England, Team India will travel to Dubai for the Champions Trophy 2025.
