England's two-time World Cup-winning star Chris Woakes has announced his retirement from international cricket on September 29 after representing the nation for 15 years. The 36-year-old's last international outing came against India in the five-Test match series of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, where he injured his shoulder during the fifth Test and he famously came out to bat with his arm in a sling, following a shoulder injury.
Woakes was eyeing a spot on this winter’s Ashes tour as the senior pro among England’s fast bowlers, but he was ruled out of the side due to a shoulder injury during the fifth Test against India.
“The moment has come and I’ve decided that the time is right for me to retire from international cricket,” said Woakes in a statement on Monday.
“Playing for England was something I aspired to do since I was a kid dreaming in the back garden, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have lived out those dreams.
“Representing England, wearing the Three Lions, and sharing the field with teammates over the last 15 years, many of whom have become lifelong friends, are things I’ll look back on with the greatest pride.”
Chris Woakes' international career
Woakes, who made his international debut against Australia in a T20I in 2011, emerged as a reliable red-ball bowler, especially in the swinging conditions in his home country. He represented England in 62 Tests across 12 years, the Warwickshire all-rounder picked 192 wickets at 29.61 while contributing 2034 runs with the bat, including one century and seven fifties.
He was part of the England team that won the 2019 World Cup at home, picking 16 wickets in 11 matches, including three in the semifinal and final as his side came out victorious on boundary count after a tied Super Over against New Zealand.
He also represented England in ICC T20 World Cup 2022 where they have defeated Pakistan in the final to win the title in Australia.
