Former South African cricketer Gary Kirsten, who led the Indian team to the famous 2011 World Cup win, is reportedly on the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) radar to become the next head coach of the men’s national team.
According to reports in a national daily, Kirsten is among the three names shortlisted for replacing Misbah-ul-Haq, who stepped down as the head coach of the national team before the ICC T20 World Cup.
The other candidates shortlisted for the job include former Australian cricketer and coach Simon Katich and former England cricketer Peter Moores. Katich had previously coached the teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 46-year-old was Kolkata Knight Riders’ assistant coach and the head coach of the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Moores has the experience of coaching the England team twice.
Ahead of the ongoing World T20 in the UAE and Oman, Misbah resigned from the top post and former legendary bowler Waqar Younis followed his suit and stepped down as the bowling coach of the Pakistan team. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) went ahead and appointed former off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq as the team’s interim coach and brought in former Australian opener Mathew Hayden as the batting consultant.
Pakistan began their T20 World Cup campaign with a bang, winning back-to-back games. In their first match, Pakistan defeated arch-rivals India by 10 wickets and then beat New Zealand by five wickets in their second match of Super 12 round in Group 2.
