Ravichandran Ashwin expresses disappointment over Jasprit Bumrah not becoming India's Test captain

Story Highlights:

Ravichandran Ashwin wanted Jasprit Bumrah to succeed Rohit Sharma as captain of the Indian Test team

Ravichandran Ashwin also threw Ravindra Jadeja's name in the Test captaincy debate

Legendary India's spinner Ravichandran Ashwin revealed the player that he wanted to see succeed Rohit Sharma as Team India's Test captain and it is none other than Jasprit Bumrah. With India set to tour England for a five-match Test series starting from June 20, it would have been a perfect opportunity for Bumrah to permanently take up the captaincy duties for India's Test team.

However, according to a report by Sky Sports, Bumrah has dropped out from the race to captain the Men in Blue in the longest format. This could be a massive blow for India as the pacer had an impressive stint as captain in the Border-Gavaskar series where he led the side in two out of five Tests.

Bumrah has previously captained India in Tests

Bumrah was the catalyst to India's only victory over Australia in the series which came in the first Test that was held at the Optus Stadium in Perth. He also led the Indian team in the final match of the series that was held in Sydney. However, Bumrah and the team weren't able to replicate their result in Perth as Australia ended up winning by 6 wickets.

Ashwin, who previously was a teammate of Bumrah, expressed his disappointment over the pacer's name getting dropped from the captaincy debate.

"I am very, very upset and disappointed that Jasprit Bumrah will not get the captaincy (of India). I think he is a national treasure. I was so happy when he became the captain, but I think it's out of the window," said Ashwin, speaking on his YouTube channel 'Ash ki Baat'.

Ashwin added Ravindra Jadeja's name into the captaincy debate

The former India spinner also threw in Ravindra Jadeja's name into the captaincy debate, stating that the captain should always be someone who is an automatic entry into the side's playing XI.

"There are obvious choices, but I want to throw in another name as well - Ravindra Jadeja. There is always news on who will be made captain or vice-captain, but their name should first be in the playing XI of the team. He must be an automatic selection," Ashwin added.

One of the names that is likely to succeed Rohit as the Test skipper is Shubman Gill. The India batter was made the vice-captain for some white-ball series in 2024, but has never been given a leadership role in Test cricket. Interestingly, when Bumrah was taken off the field due to an injury during India's clash against Australia in Sydney, it was Gill who took over as the on-field skipper.
