India’s premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah scripted history at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on Day 1 of the first Test of the series against West Indies. Bumrah picked up three wickets and became the fastest to 50 wickets in Tests at home. He achieved it in his 24th Test innings, same as former India pacer Javagal Srinath.
The second spot belongs to former India captain Kapil Dev who achieved the feat in 25 innings. Pacers Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami completed 50 Test wickets at home in 27 innings.
Bumrah took 1,747 deliveries to complete fifty of Test wickets at home, least taken by an Indian pacer.
Bumrah’s early strike
After Roston Chase won the toss and opted to bat first, Bumrah got his first wicket in the seventh over of the innings. John Campbell edged one to Dhruv Jurel. He opted for DRS and the not out decision was reversed.
Bumrah’s unplayable yorkers
In the second session, Bumrah bamboozled Justin Greaves with an accurate yorker. Greaves could not deal with the pace as he found his off-stump flattened. Greaves was top-scorer for West Indies in the innings, scoring 32 runs from 48 deliveries. In his next over, Bumrah knocked over on-debut Johann Layne with a yorker.
Siraj back in business
West Indies were bowled out for 162 in 44.1 overs. Bumrah bowled 14 overs, including three maidens, conceded 42 runs and bagged three wickets. Apart from Bumrah, his new-ball partner Mohammed Siraj wreaked havoc with a four-wicket haul. Siraj dismissed opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul for an 11-ball duck. He broke the back of West Indies' batting lineup with wickets of Alick Athanaze, Brandon King and skipper Chase.
Spinners get scalps too
Kuldeep Yadav on his return to Test cricket, dismissed Shai Hope and Jomel Warrican. The wicket of Hope came at the stroke of lunch. One wicket was picked up by off-spinner Washington Sundar who hit Khary Pierre's front pad with a fuller delivery. India’s most experienced spinner in the lineup, vice-captain Ravindra Jadeja bowled just three overs.
