India ace speedster Jasprit Bumrah scripts history during the ongoing Perth Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He picked his seventh five-wicket haul in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia) countries. With this he joins the elite club of India's legendary captain Kapil Dev for most by an Indian bowler in aforementioned countries.
Bumrah further cemented his status as one of India's greatest bowlers in SENA conditions with a stellar performance during the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth against Australia. Historically, India has struggled in SENA countries but has shown significant improvement since the 2000s.
In the ongoing Test match, Bumrah delivered an exceptional spell, bowling 18 overs and claiming five wickets for just 30 runs at an economy rate of 1.67. His victims included key players debutant Nathan McSweeney, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, Alex Carey, and skipper Pat Cummins.
Across 27 Tests in SENA nations, Bumrah has now taken 118 wickets at an average of 22.55, with his best bowling figures being 6/33. Notably, he has achieved seven five-wicket hauls, equaling Kapil Dev’s record. He is followed by BS Chandrashekhar and Zaheer Khan with six five-wicket hauls each, and Bishan Singh Bedi and Anil Kumble, who have five apiece.
Bumrah has joined an elite group of Indian captains to claim a five-wicket haul in Test cricket. He is only the fifth to achieve this milestone, alongside Vinoo Mankad (one), Bishan Singh Bedi (eight), Kapil Dev (four), and Anil Kumble (two). The last Indian captain to do so was Kumble, who took 5/84 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in 2007 during a match Australia won by 337 runs.
Bumrah's five-wicket hauls span across diverse conditions, showcasing his adaptability as a bowler. His standout performances have come in Johannesburg, Melbourne, Nottingham, North Sound, Kingston, Cape Town, Bengaluru, Visakhapatnam, and Perth, cementing his reputation as a world-class bowler across all surfaces.
Coming back to the match, After opting to bat first India's batters managed to score 150 runs during the first Test. Debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy along with KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant are the only Indian batters who managed to survive for long.For Australia, Josh Hazlewood was the highest wicket-taker as he picked 4/29. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Alex Carey got two scalps each.
While bowling, Japsrit Bumrah picked a fifer followed by Harshit Rana's three and Mohammed Siraj's two helped India to bundle out Australia on 104 runs.
