On Decembr 29, Arjun Tendulkar, son of Sachin Tendulkar was included in Mumbai’s Ranji team ahead of the 2022 season. Arjun will play under the leadership of opener Prithvi Shaw. The selection was done for Mumbai’s first two Ranji Trophy fixtures against Maharashtra and Delhi.
Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) chief selector and former Indian fast bowler Salil Ankola explained the reason behind Arjun’s selection in the team. Ankola said the southpaw "has been bowling well" after recovering from an injury and the team have been picked "looking at the future of Mumbai cricket."
"Arjun (Tendulkar) has been bowling well, unfortunately, he was injured in between but he did well in whatever games he played thereafter. We have picked a team looking at the future of Mumbai cricket," Ankola was quoted while talking to The Indian Express.
Debut in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy
Last year, the left-arm fast bowler, made his domestic debut in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Haryana where he took one wicket conceding 33 runs. The southpaw played two T20s in the tournament and scalped two wickets. With bat, he scored only three runs in one innings.
Earlier this year, the 22-year-old was picked in five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Mumbai Indians (MI) in the auction at his base price of Rs 20 lakh. The all-rounder is yet to make his IPL debut. Later, he was ruled out of the second phase of IPL 2021 after sustaining an injury.
Young talents in the team
The Mumbai squad contains prolific talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sarfaraz Khan, and Arman Jaffer. Former captain Aditya Tare who was rested for the Vijay Hazare Trophy tournament has been selected for the team as well.
Ankola opined that a few young players were picked in the team because of their stellar performance at the junior level.
“Unfortunately due to the pandemic, red-ball cricket couldn’t take place last year but we have tried to cover all areas. There are a few young players like Prince Badiani, who did well in under 19 for us. We wanted to promote them and see how they do on the big stage. What we have seen is the players coming from under 19 have performed for the senior men team too. We are hopeful that the team will do well going ahead,” Ankola explained.
