Hard-hitting wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran's retirement from international cricket came as a shock to everyone. Pooran has been doing well from T20I cricket and one of the top picks in several franchise T20 cricket leagues around the world. His decision to retire ahead of T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka raises many questions. Cricket West Indies (CWI) released a statement revealing that Pooran informed the leadership about his decision before posting it on social media.
"Cricket West Indies extends sincere gratitude and appreciation to Nicholas Pooran for his outstanding contributions to West Indies cricket. Nicholas officially informed the leadership of his decision to retire from international cricket, bringing to a close a significant chapter in his career," CWI said in a statement.
The West Indies cricket board hailed Pooran's achievements in the format. He retired as their leading run-scorer in the format on the international stage.
"A world-class player and a game changer, Nicholas leaves the game as the most capped West Indian in T20 Internationals with 106 matches and the leading T20I run-scorer with 2,275 runs. His performances on the field and influence within the team have made a lasting impact on West Indies cricket," CWI further stated.
"We salute his achievements and thank him for the moments he has given fans across the region and beyond. We wish him all the very best in the next phase of his journey."
Pooran's next stint
Pooran will be seen in action in the upcoming season of Major League Cricket 2025 when MI New York go up against Texas Super Kings at Oaklad Coliseum, California on June 13. His unbeaten 137 against Seattle Orcas is also the highest score by a batter in the league.
