Former India Test captain Rohit Sharma played a key role in convincing Yashasvi Jaiswal to stay with Mumbai instead of moving to Goa for domestic cricket. This revelation comes after the latter had received the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) earlier this year in order to leave the Mumbai team and make the switch to Goa.
However, Jaiswal surprisingly decided to make a U-turn and stayed with the Mumbai team for domestic competitions. The reason why the 23-year-old had a change of heart wasn't known to anyone, however now a report by the Mumbai Mirror has provided clarity on the matter. According to the report, it was none other than Rohit who convinced Jaiswal to stay with Mumbai and this was revealed by MCA President Ajinkya Naik.
“Rohit asked Yashasvi to stay on in Mumbai at this stage of his career. He (Rohit) explained to Yashasvi that there was a lot of pride and prestige in playing for a team like Mumbai, which has won the Ranji Trophy a record 42 times," Naik was quoted as saying.
“Rohit also told Yashasvi that he must not forget that it was because of Mumbai cricket that he got a platform to show his talent and go on to play for India, and he must be grateful to the city for that. It was here in Mumbai that he started playing cricket on the maidans and then was picked for all the age group teams of Mumbai," he added.
Rohit had attended Day 3 of Oval Test
Meanwhile, Rohit recently attended the third day of the Oval Test between India and England. Coincidentally, Jaiswal ended up scoring a valiant century during the day and played a big role in India setting up a 374-run target for the hosts. The young batter revealed that Rohit had given a message to him after the end of day's play. “I saw Rohit bhai and I said hi to him. Unhone mujhe yehi message diya ki khelte rehna (He gave me the message to bat on), that was it,” Jaiswal told the reporters after stumps.
On the other hand, Jaiswal gave a decent batting performance in the recently-concluded five-match series against England. The left-hander scored a total of 411 runs in 10 innings, including two centuries and half-centuries each.
