In a surprising turn of events, Suryakumar Yadav has broken his silence following his unexpected omission from the Indian T20I squad. Despite recently leading the national team to the finals of the 2026 T20 World Cup, the veteran batter was replaced at the helm by Shreyas Iyer for the upcoming tours of England and Ireland. Rather than expressing frustration, the former captain took to social media to react to the bombshell selection decision with grace and class.

Suryakumar's social media post goes viral after India's new T20I captain announcement
Taking to Instagram, Suryakumar shared the official squad graphic posted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He accompanied the image with a brief, supportive message for his compatriots, writing, "Wishing this highly skilled group all the best for challenges ahead," alongside a few emojis, including the Indian flag and a "nazar" amulet to ward off ill fate.
Despite his positive public stance, the squad announcement signals a definitive shift in India's future plans. At 35 years old, Suryakumar’s exclusion from the batting lineup for the Ireland and England series strongly suggests that he may have played his final match in the blue jersey. While he had spoken openly and frequently after the World Cup about his dream of representing India at the 2028 Olympics, the selectors' youth-centric rebuild means that particular ambition is unlikely to be realized.
The statistical reality behind the selectors' isn't above anyone's comprehension. Although Suryakumar's T20 World Cup campaign ultimately concluded with a historic title, his individual performances were relatively muted by his own extraordinarily high standards. Throughout the tournament, he managed to produce 242 runs across nine innings, striking at a rate of 136.72, numbers that lacked the usual explosive dominance cricket fans have come to expect from him.

Suryakumar Yadav's torrid form led to his T20I snub
This international dip in form was further compounded by a highly concerning IPL 2026 season with the Mumbai Indians. During the franchise tournament, he returned a meager 270 runs across 13 innings, averaging just 20.76 with a strike rate of 147.54. For a player widely regarded as one of the most destructive batters in the shortest format of the game, these consecutive low-scoring stretches fell well short of what the national selectors required to justify his continued inclusion in a transitioning squad.
On being asked about Shreyas Iyer's appointment as India's T20I captain, chief selector Ajit Agarkar took no time to highlight the star batter's impressive performances recently.
"With regards to Shreyas, obviously we've seen what he's done over the last few years, leading different franchises. He's won one and reached finals as well, and probably had a tougher season this year after a great start. So we've seen everything that a captain possibly can. His own performances have been really good. He was quite close to getting into that World Cup squad as well. Obviously, with Surya still there, there was no room for him," Agarkar said during the press conference.
