Former India cricketer RP Singh feels that not just Jasprit Bumrah, but Mohammed Siraj's workload also needs to be managed properly. This comes after the latter's match-winning bowling performance in the fifth Test against England led the Men in Blue to a thrilling 6-run victory. Siraj bowled 185.3 overs in the recently-concluded five-match Test series and also finished as the highest wicket-taker with 23 scalps under his name.
Singh believes that in order to prevent Siraj from frequent injuries, the team management will have to focus on managing his workload properly. He also cited an example of Bumrah and stated that it was because of the pacer's workload management that he was able to bowl well in both the ODI and T20 World Cups.
“Workload management will be crucial to prevent Siraj from getting injured in the future. Fast bowlers are at higher risk of injury when they play too many matches in a short time. His workload should be managed just like we did with Bumrah. It's because of better workload management, Bumrah bowled brilliantly in both ODI and T20 World Cups," Singh said in an interview with PTI-Bhasha.
"Siraj is also in the same league. To protect him from injuries, we need to seriously focus on his workload, sooner or later. Siraj was the only bowler who played all five Tests and bowled with full energy and intensity in each match," he added.
RP Singh showers praise on Mohammed Siraj
Singh also pointed out that the delivery that Siraj bowled to dismiss Gus Atkinson and win the match for India was one of the pacer's top five fastest deliveries of the series. He further praised the 31-year-old for putting in an incredible bowling effort and for maintaining fitness throughout the five-match assignment.
"The last ball of the series, which bowled out the batsman, was one of his top five fastest deliveries in the series. This shows that he never lacked effort. He focused on bowling with the right line and length and contributed beyond expectations for the team. His fitness and rhythm were excellent throughout," Singh stated.
Meanwhile, India's next assignment in red-ball cricket will be a two-match tour against West Indies which will commence from October 2. The Men in Blue currently stand on the third position on the World Test Championship (WTC) points table and will be looking to improve their position further with their tour to the Caribbean.
