India’s pacer Mohammed Shami has been a proven performer in international cricket. Not a regular in intial matches of ODI World Cup 2023, Shami ended as the highest wicket-taker of the tournament. Despite his performances, Shami has been on the receiving end of hate messages on social media. After the loss to Pakistan in ICC T20 World Cup 2021, Shami got hate messages on social media. During the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Shami was targetted by trolls for drinking water during Ramadan. In a recent interaction, he has opened up on whether Muslim players get trolled more on social media.
“I do not pay heed to such trolling. I have been given a job. I am not a machine. If I am working hard throughout the year, sometimes I will fail, sometimes succeed. It depends on the people how they take it. When you play for your country, you forget all such things. It becomes more important for you to take wickets and win matches. I do not want to go on social media at such a time. You see both positive and negative comments. When you are playing, you should stay away from such things," Shami told News24.
“We work hard to get success. Trolls just have to type two lines. True fans will never do this. If you have an objection, raise it respectfully. If you think you can do better than me, please come and try. It is always open," he added.

Shami on India-Pakistan clashes amidst tensions
Shami also shared his opinion on the controversial upcoming clash between India and Pakistan on September 14.
"I stay out of controversies. The government and board decide, and we follow,” he said.
“Playing Pakistan is different because of the fan craze, but for players, it's about performing."
Shami is disappointed not to make it to India’s T20 Asia Cup 2025 squad. He was part of the T20I series against England earlier this year, prior to the Champions Trophy 2025 in UAE.
Shami’s next target
Shami is currently playing in the Duleep Trophy 2025 for East Zone against North Zone. He will be looking to make comeback to Test squad for the home Test series against West Indies in October.
