VIVO, the title sponsor of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has pulled out of the glitzy league ahead of the 2022 mega auction.
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to replace it with TATA as the new title sponsor.
This was decided at the Governing Council meeting of the IPL on Tuesday (January 11).
The Governing Council has approved Chinese handset company's request to transfer the title rights to Tata, one of the biggest corporates of the country. VIVO has a couple of years left in its sponsorship deal with the league and during this period, Tata will remain the main sponsor. The league will now be called Tata IPL.
“VIVO requested us for the transfer of rights and the Governing Council has approved it”, IPL Governing Council Chairman Brijesh Patel confirmed the development.
“This is indeed a momentous occasion for the BCCI & IPL as the Tata Group is the epitome of global Indian enterprise with an over 100-year-old legacy and operations in more than 100 countries across six continents. The BCCI like the TATA Group which is keen to promote the spirit of cricket across international borders and the growing popularity of the IPL as a global sporting franchise, bears testimony to the BCCI’s efforts. We are truly happy that India’s largest and most trusted business groups has believed in the IPL growth story and together with the Tata Group, we will look to take Indian cricket and the IPL forward to greater heights,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in a statement.
VIVO was paying the BCCI INR 440 crore annually for the 5-year deal which they bagged in 2017 by bidding a whopping INR 2,199 crores in 2017.
Meanwhile, earlier the BCCI was planning to conduct the entire 2022 edition of the IPL in Maharashtra in a bio bubble environment in view of the increasing number of Covid-19 cases in the country but now the decision will be taken after observing the situation of Covid-19 cases in the country.
“As of now we have not taken any call on venues of IPL but yes in March will reassess the the situation once again. We are in touch with all stakeholders and government we are trying to have IPL. This year in our country only, in March around see because if case load will not drop then will have to create cluster where 4 or 5 stadiums are there and no air travel is required and we are looking for it but as of now now we will take the call on it as per situation of COVID-19,” a source told Sports Tak.
