At Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, West Indies kept the ODI series alive with a five-wicket win (by DLS method) over Pakistan on August 10. Jayden Seales' three-fer, followed by Sherfane Rutherford's fireworks and Roston Chase's patient knock helped West Indies get over the line with 10 balls to spare.
Big names fail
West Indies skipper Shai Hope won the toss and opted to bowl first. Saim Ayub got Pakistan off to a decent start. In the ninth over, Seales ended Ayub's stay at the crease He scored 23 runs from 31 balls. In the same over, Seales knocked over Babar Azam with a fuller delivery. Babar departed for a three-ball duck. Mohammad Rizwan struggled to rotate strike. After the 16th over, rain played spoilsport but no overs were lost. After break, young Jediah Blades dismissed the opener Abdullah Shafique for a 40-ball 26. Gudakesh Motie lured Rizwan into a sweep shot. Rizwan missed and got out lbw for a 38-ball 16. Pakistan got to the 100-run mark in the 24th over.
Pakistan finish with flourish after rain breaks
Then Chase got the prized wicket of in-form Hussain Talat who scored 31 runs from 32 balls. Shamar Joseph joined the party by dismissed Pakistan's T20I captain Salman Agha for a single-digit score. Hasan Nawaz tried to accelerate but rain intervened again. After a long break, it was reduced to 40 overs per side. Hasan Nawaz failed to make a mark and departed for a single-digit score as he became Seales' third victim. In next two overs, three sixes were hit before rain returned. As per DLS, West Indies were set a target of 181 from 35 overs. Hasan Nawaz remained unbeaten for a 30-ball 36.
Slow start, Rutherford infuses life into run chase
West Indies did not get off to a good start. Hasan Ali struck in his first over. Brandon King went out fishing outside off stump. In his next over, Hasan Ali got extra bounce and got the wicket of Evin Lewis. Keacy Carty went into defensive mode. It was Abrar Ahmed who knocked him over with a googly. Carty scored just 16 runs from 42 balls. Skipper Hope tried to play the anchor role. Rutherford launched a counter-attack, hitting Shaheen Afridi for a six and two fours in the 17th over. He targetted Salman in the next over, hitting two sixes and as many fours. In the 19th over, his catch was dropped off Abrar's bowling. West Indies crossed the 100-run mark in the 19th over.
Nawaz strikes twice but Chase ensures win
Mohammad Nawaz got the breakthrough as he got Hope stumped. The skipper scored 32 runs from 35 balls, including two fours and a six. In his next over, he ended Rutherford's stay at the crease. He hit four fours and three sixes in his 33-ball 45. Chase and Justin Greaves were cautious at the start, especially against Nawaz. After his quota of overs were completed, Chase hit Ayub for two sixes in an over. The continued to chip away and got West Indies over the line with 10 balls to spare. Chase scored 49 runs from 37 balls, including two fours and a six. Greaves contributed 26 runs from 31 balls in the unbeaten 77-run partnership for the sixth wicket.
The three-ODI series is levelled at 1-1. This is West Indies' first ODI win at home in 2025. The decider will be played at the same venue on August 12.
