Youngest player to get picked in Indian Premier League (IPL) auction history Vaibhav Suryavanshi failed to impress on his One-Day debut for India Under-19. In the run chase against Pakistan in ACC Under-19 Asia Cup 2024, Suryavanshi departed after scoring just a single.
In the run chase of 282 at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Suryavanshi lost his wicket poking his bat at a delivery outside the off stump bowled by Ali Raza. The southpaw faced nine deliveries to score a single.
Last week, the 13-year-old started a mini-bidding war between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Delhi Capitals (DC). He was eventually roped in for Rs 1.1 crore by the inaugural IPL-winners.
RR head coach Rahul Dravid lauded the Bihar-born batter who he had seen batting in the franchise's trials.
"I think he's (Suryavanshi) got some really good skills, so we thought it might be a good environment for him to grow in. Vaibhav just came to our trials and we were really happy with what he saw," said Dravid in an IPL video.
Suryavanshi's recent outings
Suryavanshi made headlines when he scored the fastest hundred for India's U19 team against Australia U19 in an unofficial Test. He took just 58 balls to breach the three figures.
Recently, he made his T20 debut for Bihar in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024 against Rajasthan and scored 13 runs from six balls. He hit a couple of sixes before losing his wicket to experienced campaigner Deepak Chahar.
Suryavanshi's idol - Lara
Before the match against Pakistan, he said that he is not bothered about the spotlight on him considering his age. He also revealed West Indies' legendary batter Brian Lara as his idol.
"I'm currently focused on my game. I'm not bothered by what's happening around," the teenager told the broacasters on Sony Sports. "Brian Lara is my idol," he further added in the same interview before the play began.
