Oman's Nadeem breaks Jayasuriya's record for oldest to score T20 World Cup fifty, equals Rizwan's unwanted feat

Oman's Mohammad Nadeem entered record books on February 12. Nadeem became the oldest to score a half-century in T20 World Cup history. Nadeem is currently 43 years and 161 days old. The previous record was held by former Sri Lankan opener Sanath Jayasuriya. The fiery opener was 39 years and 345 days old when he scored a half-century against West Indies in the 2009 edition of the tournament.

In Oman's unsuccessful run chase against Sri Lanka at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Nadeem complete his fifty in the penultimate over. He took 52 balls to reach fifty, the joint-slowest in T20 World Cups. In the previous edition, Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan took 52 balls to score a fifty against Canada in New York.

Nadeem walked out to bat at no.4. He hit three fours and a six in his unbeaten 53 off 56 deliveries. He prevented Oman from getting bowled out. Oman posted 120/9 on the board and lost the match by 105 runs.

This is Oman's biggest defeat in terms of runs, surpassing the 93-run loss against Pakistan in T20 Asia Cup 2025. Also, it is the second-biggest T20I win for Sri Lanka by runs.

Nadeem in Oman’s elite list

Nadeem also became the fourth Oman batter to score a half-century in T20 World Cups. Aqib Ilyas (50 not out) and Jitender Singh (73 not out) scored their half-centuries against Papua New Guinea in 2021 edition. In the previous edition, Pratik Athavale scored a half-century against Scotland.

Oman at bottom, almost out of Super 8 race

This was Oman's second defeat of T20 World Cup 2026. They are placed at the bottom of Group B points table with a net run rate (NRR) of - 4.306. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka climbed to the top of the points table with their second win on the trot.

Oman on the verge of getting knocked out of the tournament. They will go up against Ireland at Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo on February 14.
