T20 World Cup 2026 final will take place on March 8.

India opener Abhishek Sharma has had a tough T20 World Cup 2026 so far. Apart from a 55-run innings against Zimbabwe, the young opener has struggled to get going in the tournament. His latest outing against England in the semi-final in Mumbai ended in disappointment, as he scored just 9 runs off 7 balls.

That was the fourth time in the showpiece event that Abhishek was dismissed by spin. Looking to play a big shot off Will Jacks, he mistimed the ball and was out cheaply, adding another low score to his record.

Ashwin's advice to Abhishek Sharma

Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin called the dismissal “headless batting.” Speaking on his YouTube channel Ash Ki Baat, Ashwin advised Abhishek to focus more on timing rather than trying to hit every ball hard, pointing out that opposition teams will always have plans to counter him.

“Abhishek Sharma has that factor. In the series against New Zealand, he was in top form. He has batted well against Mitchell Santner and Matt Henry in the past. So I wouldn’t be too fussed about Abhishek. But I would like to have a conversation with him. I would tell him, ‘Listen, there’s a plan against you.’ So don’t try hard to hit the ball,” Ashwin said.

He added, “In the semi-final against England, I think it was headless batting from him. I am a big fan of his gameplay. He scored eight runs against Jacks, but he intended to score 30. Sometimes, you just have to leave the ball. Sanju Samson is going so well at the other end, so just take the single and get to the other end. You will get your opportunity.”

Abhishek should be allowed to take strike

Ashwin also stressed that Abhishek should be allowed to take his time at the crease, especially with Sanju Samson performing well at the other end.

“Abhishek is a very talented player, but I want to know what conversations are happening with him. Is he under too much pressure? When you add pressure, he tends to try hitting harder. He is a fluent player who relies on timing. You have to give him the right space, and I will continue to back him,” Ashwin said.
