The 2023 Ashes series between England and Australia is currently underway in the U.K. but the rivalry between the two nations reached Lithuania when Aussie Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met with his U.K. counterpart Rishi Sunak on the sidelines of the NATO summit. The two prime ministers engaged in a hilarious Ashes banter, the video of which instantly went viral across social media platforms.
It all began when Aussie PM Albanese presented a piece of paper to PM Sunak in which the current Ashes scoreline of 2-1 was written on it. The U.K. PM was prepared with a counter himself as he took out a picture of Mark Wood and Chris Woakes celebrating on the ground after England won the Leeds Test match.
PM Albanese was prepared for PM Sunak's counter and the Aussie PM said, "I was going to be really provocative”, before he took out a picture of Jonny Bairstow getting stumped during the Lord's Test.
The U.K. PM reacted sharply and said, "I’m sorry I didn’t bring my sandpaper with me.”
PM Sunak then took to Twitter and shared a picture with his Aussie counterpart and wrote, "I promised Anthony Albanese I’d give him one of our ministerial folders. Naturally it came with a little reminder of last weekend … two more to go."
On the final day of the Lord's Test, which was the second match of the ongoing series, emotions ran high not just amongst the players but also among the crowd present inside the stadium to watch the action unfold. The tipping point came when Australian wicket-keeper Alex Carey stumped Jonny Bairstow after the latter ducked a bouncer from Cameron Green and casually left his crease.
England cricketers, head coach and fans voiced their displeasure on the incident and questioned the spirit of the game as the Three Lions ended up losing the match and Bairstow's dismissal played a big part in it.
