FIFA World Cup trophy remains the most coveted prize in football, symbolizing the pinnacle of success on the global stage. However, ahead of the 2026 edition of the tournament, the iconic trophy has grabbed attention for a different reason—its soaring monetary value.

According to recent estimates, the value of the trophy has more than doubled since the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The remarkable increase is largely linked to the surge in gold prices over the last few years, making the famous prize more valuable than ever before.

Why has the FIFA World Cup trophy become so valuable?
The FIFA World Cup trophy is crafted from 6.175 kilograms of 18-carat gold and contains approximately 4.93 kilograms of pure gold. As gold prices have continued to rise globally, the intrinsic value of the trophy has followed the same trajectory.
Current estimates place the trophy's value at around USD 713,000, a significant jump from the roughly USD 277,000 valuation recorded when Argentina lifted the trophy in Qatar in 2022.
The increase has been fueled by several economic factors, including geopolitical uncertainty, trade-related tensions and slower global economic growth. These conditions have traditionally driven investors toward gold, pushing prices to record levels and consequently increasing the value of objects made from the precious metal.
The difference becomes even more striking when viewed historically. When the current trophy design was introduced ahead of the 1974 FIFA World Cup, its estimated value stood at approximately USD 25,000. Over the decades, rising gold prices have transformed it into one of the most valuable trophies in world sport.
How does it compare with other major sporting trophies?
The FIFA World Cup trophy comfortably outclasses other major sporting prizes in terms of raw material value. Unlike most prestigious trophies, which are primarily made from silver, the World Cup trophy is crafted from gold, giving it a substantial advantage.
Among European football competitions, the UEFA Champions League trophy and UEFA Europa League trophy are both made from sterling silver and carry significantly lower melt values. Their estimated valuations stand at around USD 16,950 and USD 22,600, respectively.
In the United States, the Borg-Warner Trophy, awarded to the winner of the Indianapolis 500, is considered one of the most valuable trophies. Made from approximately 69 kilograms of sterling silver, it has an estimated melt value of around USD 156,000, still far below the World Cup trophy.

Other famous prizes, such as the Woodlawn Vase and the Vince Lombardi Trophy, also trail considerably in terms of intrinsic material value.
While the true worth of the FIFA World Cup trophy extends far beyond its gold content, the sharp rise in precious metal prices has ensured that football's most prestigious prize is now more valuable than at any point in its history.
