With Messi once again leading Argentina's scoring charts during the tournament, questions have emerged over whether the reigning world champions rely too heavily on their captain in the final third. Scaloni, however, insisted that his focus remains firmly on results rather than who gets on the scoresheet.

Scaloni addresses Messi dependency debate
Argentina entered the knockout stage after finishing top of Group J with three consecutive victories, including a convincing 3-1 win over Jordan in their final group-stage fixture.
Despite Messi continuing to deliver in crucial moments, Scaloni believes the team's overall performances matter far more than individual statistics.
Speaking ahead of Argentina's clash against Cape Verde, the World Cup-winning manager acknowledged that he would welcome goals from more players but stressed that victories remain the priority.
Scaloni explained that while opportunities have fallen to several members of the squad, Lionel Messi has simply been the one converting them. He added that as long as Argentina continues to perform well collectively and keep winning matches, he has no concerns over where the goals are coming from.
"Other players have had their chances, but Leo, as one of our attackers, ended up with the goals. That doesn’t worry me. Sure, I’d be happy to see more players scoring, but as long as we’re playing well and winning, that’s what matters," Scaloni said.
The Argentine boss also admitted that every knockout match presents a completely different challenge, emphasising that even the strongest teams have found life difficult at the tournament.
Argentina prepares for tricky Cape Verde challenge
While Argentina head into the contest as favourites, Scaloni refused to underestimate Cape Verde, who reached the Round of 32 without suffering defeat during the group stage.
The African nation progressed after recording three consecutive draws, frustrating several higher-ranked opponents to book their place in the knockout rounds.
Lionel Scaloni highlighted Cape Verde's organisation and resilience, insisting his players are fully aware that there is no margin for error in the knockout phase.
He also provided an update on Lionel Messi's availability, indicating that the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner is expected to feature, although the final decision will depend on his physical condition closer to kick-off.
